BIOGRAPHY

Tenor Stéphane Sénéchal has been lauded for his penetrating vocal interpretations and insightful role depictions. One critic described his Fabrice in Mozart's L'Oca del Cairo at L'Opéra Comique in Paris as "possessing a generous vocal talent, with diction and musical style of a rare quality, and a stage presence ideally capable of embodying the romantic male lead" (Opéra and Le Parisien). His Don Ottavio was described as "elegant Mozartian singing with true dramatic expression" (). As Fenton his singing was said to "harbor true treasures of delicacy and style, along with moments of deeply felt emotion."

Acclaimed for his perceptive portrayals as Gérald, Nadir, Faust, Don José, Roméo and many others, Sénéchal is regarded as "the world's foremost ambassador of French lyric vocal art." The British press, including the London Times, acknowledged his Florestan in Offenbach's Un mari à la porte as "ardent, open-toned, sung with perfect style, elegance and aplomb!"

Recently, he was featured on "Étonnez-moi Benoît", a popular classical radio program, broadcast throughout Europe and Russia.

Reviewing his Coëlio in the DVD release of Henri Sauguet's Les Caprices de Marianne, Opéra hailed him as "a great discovery ... a practically ideal incarnation of this role." His portrayal of Zéphoris in Adolphe Adam's Si j'étais Roi reveals "great acting, true musicianship, a clear powerful voice, finely woven sonorities, homogenous timbre across all registers and diction of a rare quality. You get all of this in just one tenor: Stéphane Sénéchal!" (Operette).

A recent review states, "Stéphane Sénéchal is an exemplary Chevalier de La Force." Another critic says his Des Grieux is "as tender as he is valiant, with an expansive, stirring voice" (Lyrica). La Lettre du Musicien reviewed his performance in Mozart's Entführung aus dem Serail as follows: "Stéphane Sénéchal is just as much at ease theatrically as vocally as a lead, finally, here we have a tenor who has powerful projection!"

Stéphane Sénéchal has garnered several major vocal prizes including First Prize at the Luxembourg European Competition for Young Soloists, First Prize at the International Lyric Art Competition in Vivonne, winner of the Prix de Béziers and the Viñas International Singing Contest in Barcelona, the Grand Prix Fauré awarded by the Concours International d'Interprétation de la Mélodie Française in Toulouse, and The Richard Wagner Lyric Circle Scholarship (France).

Born in Saint-Denis, Stéphane Sénéchal studied piano and voice at the Bordeaux Conservatory. He holds degrees in Political Science and Geopolitics from La Sorbonne. He continued to hone his considerable vocal skills under the tutelage of the great French contralto Jocelyne Taillon. He participated in master classes with Montserrat Caballé and Régine Crespin.
